With school starting soon and the weather turning from too hot to too cold, my mind has lately gone to finding good activities for my son to keep him busy when going outside isn’t an option and all of his big guy friends are back at school. I’ve been searching for low or no cost activities to keep him involved including playgroups. Enter Homegrown Friends.
Homegrown Friends is a playgroup matching service that connects parents and children ages 0-3 with others based on location, child’s age and parent’s personal preferences. Homegrown Friend’s goal is to help parents and children find meaningful friendships while using their expertise in Early Childhood Education to create age-appropriate activities to help playgroups run smoothly.
Membership includes:
- Playgroup placement
- Exclusive access to an online forum to pose parenting questions, offer insight, suggestions and buy and sell items
- Weekly emails providing activity suggestions to help guide the playgroups
Homegrown Friends launches this week in 6 US locations including here in Madison, WI! Other locations include Philadelphia, PA, Austin, TX, Des Moines, Iowa, Brooklyn, NY and Greater Hartford Area, CT.

You might also want to consider some of the local moms groups. In Middleton, there is the Middleton MOMS Club (http://momsclubofmiddleton.com/). MOMS Club also has chapters on the East side and in Southwest Madison. For people living in West Madison, there is the Westside Mamas (http://www.meetup.com/Madison-Westside-Mamas/). All these groups provide year-round activities, including playgroups, for moms at home with their little ones. The fee is typically $20-30 annually, plus the cost of any additional activities (e.g. riding the train at the zoo is on you).
